Various fields of research in the field of neurophysiology and neuropathophysiology are organised in individual working groups at the Institute.

Key topics include the physiology and pathophysiology of cortical neuronal networks, cortical interneurons, axons and presynaptic boutons in rodent model systems as well as molecular mechanisms of synaptic transmission of central synapses. Others are physiology and pharmacology of neuronal network activities in the gamma frequency range (gamma oscillations), physiology and pathophysiology of energy supply and blood vessel regulation in nervous tissue, the microglia of the cerebral cortex, all in the rodent model, as well as learning behaviour, physiology and neurogenetics of fruit flies. The various aspects of these research topics are investigated using a wide range of electrophysiological, histological, molecular biological and genetic methods.
